Artisanal and provocative, MJZ’s ethically produced collections combine couture and exotic crocodile skins, putting a new spin on power dressing

“The crocodile is an apex predator. It is fearsome and powerful, yet its underbelly is encased in the most beautiful, smooth skin – tactile but strong,” says Michael Chang, founder and Creative Director of luxury fashion label MJZ. “Each skin is unique, making a crocodile-skin garment the most exclusive, exotic fashion statement – a mosaic masterpiece that has a provocative presence and character unlike any other.”

Michael can trace the origin of his brand, founded in 2017, to his childhood and the early influences of his mother, who, for him, embodies elegance and sophistication. As a young man, his creativity blossomed into a desire to launch his own collection. It sparked a globetrotting adventure that took him from New York to China and Europe in search of expertise, experience and associates.

Michael was determined that every element of his inaugural collection, from materials to manufacturing, would represent the very best of his global tour. The result was a brand that combines exotic materials with youthful, disruptive New York design influences and the sophisticated craftsmanship of the French ateliers in which the pieces are made.

The successful launch of the MJZ men’s collection was soon followed by a collaboration to produce a women’s couture collection with fashion designer Irina Shabayeva, who subsequently joined MJZ as Women’s Artistic Director. Both collections empower the male and female form with the strength of the source from which they are crafted – creatures every bit as revered by Michael as the couture.

“Sustainability is an important way to honour the source of the crocodile and alligator skins I work with,” explains Michael. “They are from traceable, ethical sources and every garment is accompanied by a certificate to verify this. I believe that by creating collectable pieces that will endure far beyond fashion fads, I can further my pursuit of perfection.”

In early 2023, MJZ launched an online ready-to-wear collection. The brand’s trademark reptile skins are complemented by softer fabrics, such as calfskin and lambskin, Japanese cotton and Ponte jersey, in hoodies, coats, t-shirts and accessories. While the crocodilian couture may have been tamed in the new collection, there is no mistaking MJZ’s powerful silhouettes, disruptive designs and ultra-luxe quality.
