Beside Bavaria’s pristine Lake Tegernsee, Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach is an upmarket holiday destination for those in the know

With its elegant rooms and mountain views, Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach has all the hallmarks of a high-end European holiday destination. A ten-minute walk from scenic Lake Tegernsee, 50km from Munich, this luxurious and exclusive resort is the work of owner Korbinian Kohler, who brings a boutique-hotel feel amid the beautiful Bavarian landscape.

The hotel dates from the 19th century, taking its name from the Weissach river that flows through the grounds. Korbinian, who grew up in Tegernsee, took ownership in 2010 and began transforming the hotel and region into a tourist hotspot. “I’m involved in interior design, architecture and new concepts on a daily basis,” he says. “The area is what Saint-Tropez is to France, or the Hamptons to New York.”

Eleven exclusive lakeside apartments have recently opened at Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach, offering complete privacy alongside the picturesque views and shared resort amenities, while the other hotels, restaurants and services around the lake combine to create a wide-ranging resort experience. “You have a whole holiday region at your disposal,” says Korbinian. “You can even go up into the mountains and, uniquely, it will still feel like you’re at Bachmair Weissach.”

Activities span from paddleboarding to hiking, horse riding, golf and yoga. “It’s also about entertainment and culture, mainly art, travel and philosophy,” says Korbinian. “We cater to children, too.” A state-of-the-art entertainment centre, which opened in 2022, is a perfect example of Korbinian’s design-led vision. “The centre is a mix between a museum, adventure, education and sport,” he says. “Like a high-end playground.”

The next step is to become carbon neutral, motivated by events in Ukraine. “On the morning war broke out, I said we had to move away from gas and towards renewable energy,” says Korbinian. “We built a photovoltaic power station and are waiting for official confirmation that we’re carbon neutral, which is expected in 2023.”

For Korbinian, running Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach is more than a job. “As soon as I entered this industry, I loved it,” he says. “I rolled up my sleeves and focused on it entirely.” Thanks to his passion and hard work, Korbinian’s home town is firmly on the tourist map.
