Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa is a Balearic haven, where mountains meet the sea and luxury means simplicity
One of the most glorious features of Mallorca’s Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa is its location, between the Mediterranean and the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. “The view, calmness and spirit of nature are authentic,” says Miguel Massanet, Director of Sales and Marketing. “You step into the hotel and feel like you are in a different world.”
Named Spain’s Leading Luxury Hotel in the 2022 World Travel Awards, the property crowns a promontory high above the pretty harbour town of Port de Sóller. Rooms and suites are laid out to capture the sunrise over the mountains or the spectacular Mediterranean sunset. “We have a privileged position here, overlooking the green mountain valleys, listening to the sound of the waves breaking against the rocks,” says Miguel. “There is a sense of dislocation from daily life, of being in paradise, with visitors connected to the beauty of the natural setting.”
Jumeirah Port Soller also embraces the natural bounty of the island’s olive and citrus groves and abundance of seafood. “The dining experience here on Mallorca is all about simplicity. Simplicity is true luxury for us in the Mediterranean. The focus is always on taste and quality. It means that we bring food directly from sea to plate and from land to plate,” says Miguel. The hotel sources around 80 per cent of its raw ingredients from the island, ensuring its guests eat the tastiest, sun-ripened produce and freshest fish, selected by the hotel chef on his daily visit to the harbour.
One of the best places at the hotel to experience both the setting and cuisine is the Sunset Lounge, where the dramatic views span the Tramuntana range, Port de Sóller and the Mediterranean. The Nikkei-influenced menu combines the delicacy of Japanese cuisine with spicy, zesty Peruvian flavours. A tempting cocktail menu and resident DJ keep the warm, sophisticated scene buzzing until the early hours. “The whole idea of our hotel is to stimulate the senses and the Sunset Lounge has become the place to be on the island.”
While creating a haven within the hotel, which includes the Talise Spa with its locally inspired treatments, sauna, hammam and outdoor hydropool, Miguel and his team are also focused on bringing the wider experience of the life and culture of Mallorca to their guests. “Mallorca is a hidden gem when it comes to wine production, for example. We co-operate with a couple of renowned wineries to offer tastings and visits for our guests.”
As for shopping, it is not just about designer labels. The most interesting purchases are unique pieces of pearl jewellery, hand-woven baskets and distinctive local ceramics. Visits to picture-perfect Fornalutx, historic Deià or Valldemossa, which is set in a verdant mountain valley, offer visitors a flavour of the island’s scenery and rich traditions.
Helping to protect the local way of life and environment is important to the hotel. “We work with the Sóller Cooperative that supports local olive farmers, and have committed to buying the majority of their oil, which we use across our restaurants,” explains Miguel. In addition, the hotel has installed a water system that provides guests with filtered water from the mountains. “We no longer bring water onto the island, and use refillable bottles to cut down on plastic waste.”
Between sea and mountains, luxury and authenticity, Jumeirah Port Soller offers discerning guests an elegant escape from their daily routine and a charming introduction to island life.
